• Description

After leaving the house, Prince Siddhartha traveled a lot and tried to find the ultimate truth. He attained enlightenment at Bodhgaya in Bihar near the old kingdom of Magadh. After attaining enlightenment the first sermon he preached was in Saranath near Lucknow. But Lord Buddha spent most of his time in Sravasti.
Sravasti was founded by a King called Sravast and named it after him.
Sravasti was under the rule of Koshal dynasty when Buddha came and stayed here. He received a great patronage from the Kings of the Koshal dynasty who not only patronized the philosophy but also helped spreading the Buddhist doctrine all over the world.
It was in Sravasti that Buddha multifold himself thousand times, to silence his critics, thus giving the story of miracle of Sravasti, which manifested in most of the Buddhist paintings and sculptures. Buddha is supposed to have stayed here for 24 monsoon seasons. Probably the longest period he stayed anywhere in his entire life. The small villages of Sahet and Mahet nearby house many Stupas and temples proving the association of Buddha with the place. Sravasti has the famous Anandbodhi tree which is believed to be the offshoot of the tree that was planted by the favourite disciple of Buddha, Anand.
Sravasti carries an equal importance for the Jain followers as well as it is supposed to be the birth place of Tirthankar Sambhavnath. The Shobhnath temple is a revered site for the Jains.
Sahet is the site of the Jetvana monastery, the monastery donated to Gautam Buddha by a wealthy merchant. There are many Stupas and temples in the area. The Stupas and monasteries mainly belong to the Koshal dynasty and the temples belong to the Gupta dynasty.
The Buddha passed the greater part of his monastic life in Shravasti. His first visit to Shravasti was at the invitation of Anathapindika, whom he met in Rajagaha. The main monasteries in Shravasti were the Jetavana and the Pubbarama. Shravasti also contained the monastery of Rajakarama, built by Pasenadi, opposite Jetavana. Not far from the city was a dark forest called the Andhavana, where some monks and nuns went to live. Outside the city gate of Shravasti was a fisherman's village of five hundred families

Sonepur Mela starts in November and lasts for next 15 days to one month every year. It draws more than 600,000 visitors to the Sonepur. One of the major attractions of the fair is the sight of scores of elephants that are beautifully decorated and lined up for sale. This is the only place in India or probably in the world where largest number of elephants are traded at one place. The buyers are mainly government forest department officials. You may even find the trading of large number of horses, goats, buffaloes, donkeys, ponies and dogs etc. along with elephants and other household cattle. In his very first sermon Lord Buddha put forth the Middle Way, the Four Noble Truths, and the Eightfold Path - the message spread rapidly, penetrating caste and class barriers; today Buddhism is a way of life in large parts of the world, its message of peace and tolerance speaks to us all. Buddha preached that the way to salvation is not dependent on God but on understanding the way things really are for all living beings subject to desire. We take you on a journey to places associated with important events in Buddha's life. Prince Siddhartha was born at Lumbini, became Buddha, the Enlightened One, at Bodhgaya, gave his first sermon at Sarnath, lived the greater part of his monastic life in Sravasti, and attained Nirvana at Kushinagar.

One of the fastest spread religions of the world is Buddhism. May be because of its theory to overcome the sorrow of life. The preacher of this theory was born at the small village on the borders of Nepal and India and went on to attain enlightenment under the Bodhi tree in another small hamlet in India, known as the Gaya, which was later known to be Bodhgaya. This tour takes you from the birth place of the Lord to the place wher he breathed his last.
