Formerly, and rather confusingly, known as Mafeking and originally named Mahikeng, Mafikeng is today the capital city of the North West province that lies on the border with Botswana about 260 kilometres west of Johannesburg. Mafikeng is a worthwhile visit purely for its history during the Second Boer War in 1899 when the then town was famously besieged. Known as the Siege of Mafeking, it lasted 217 days and turned Robert Baden-Powell into something of a national hero.Today Mafikeng is a vibrant provincial and commercial capital and a major tourism attraction for the aspects of the history, culture and wildlife of this unique region of South Africa.Location
