    Altus is a city in Jackson County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 21,447 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Jackson County.Interestingly, "Altus" is an anagram of Oklahoma''''s second most-populated city, Tulsa. Altus Speedway is a 1/3 mile asphalt oval race track and the Sooner International Raceway is a 1/2 mile asphalt tri-oval race track. The racing season runs from April - October and is located North of the Quartz Mountain Resort Park.

The park and lake offer a variety of recreational activities, and the rugged granite hills and fascinating geologic history promise a unique experience for the hiking enthusiast. Trout season is November 1 - March 15. Additional facilities include boat ramps, picnic areas, group shelter, restrooms, swimming beach, electric outlets, playground, marina, enclosed fishing dock and swimming pool.
Western Oklahoma State College, established as Altus Junior College in 1926, is the oldest continuing two year college in Oklahoma.
The Reservoir lies on West Otter Creek, northeast of Altus. Agricultural crops and native short grass, with scattered growths of hardy mesquite trees provide a sharp contrast to the stark granite outcrops of the nearby Wichita Mountains. The Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge is only a few miles to the east and is home to large herds of roaming buffalo, longhorn cattle, elk and smaller bands of other protected animals. Waterfowl and dove are the most popular game. The area affords some of the best fishing in the southwest with catfish, crappie, bass and other species.
The Museum of the Western Prairie houses two main galleries exploring the history of Southwest Oklahoma. Topics include fossils, Native Americans, the Great Western Cattle Trail, frontier life, agriculture, the and Altus Air Force Base. On the grounds you will find farm tools, an operating windmill, a half-dugout, and a carriage barn with various displays including a mail hack and blacksmith shop.
