    Augusta is the capital of the U.S. state of Maine, county seat of Kennebec County, and center of population for Maine.Located on the Kennebec River at the head of tide, it is home to the University of Maine at Augusta.Augusta borders the towns of Manchester to its west, Sidney and Vassalboro to its north, Windsor to its east, Chelsea to its south, and the city of Hallowell ot its southwest.Cultural opportunities in Augusta include a variety of theatrical and musical events. Shakespearean plays are presented at the Theater at Monmouth. The Augusta Symphony performs at various local sites throughout the year.

A variety of special events are held at this 32,000 square foot multipurpose civic center that can accommodate any type of function including sporting events, expositions, trade shows, conventions, and corporate meetings. Features of the building include 20 flexible capacity rooms, an impressive main auditorium, two ballrooms, and three lecture auditoriums.
The Children''s Discovery Museum in Augusta features hands-on exhibits and role playing opportunities. Simulated work place areas, including a new construction exhibit, give children a basic understanding of various occupations. Also of interest are a stage and puppet theater, and a party room that maybe reserved for birthdays.
Four floors of exhibits at this museum display over 12,000 years of Maine history, including the Ice Age, the Paleo-Indians, the first European explorers, and wonderful arts and crafts that depict the way of life in Maine.
The oldest surviving wooden fort in America, this National Historic Landmark was once used as a staging point for the assault on Quebec with Benedict Arnold during the American Revolution. There is also a house museum on site that is filled with period furnishings and a store that contains hundreds of items documented in historic account books.
The area of the Pine Tree State Arboretum in Augusta features more than 200 species of trees and shrubs. There is also a 4mi/6km trail available for hiking, bird watching, biking, horseback riding, and cross-country skiing.
The Maine State House in Augusta was finished in 1832 by Charles Bulfinch. It is built of Hallowell granite.
