    Alexandria is a city in and the parish seat of Rapides Parish, Louisiana, United States.It lies on the south bank of the Red River in almost the exact geographic center of the state. The population was 46,342 at the 2000 census.The Alexandria Museum of Art was founded in 1977 and occupies the historic Rapides Bank Building on the banks of the Red River. The building was built circa 1898 and is listed on the National Historic Register. It opened to the public in March 1998.A popular attraction is the Alexandria Zoological Park.Frequently praised by American zookeeper Jack Hanna, the zoo features more than six hundred animals from throughout the planet as well as an award-winning exhibit on the Louisiana habitat.Alexandria sits in the middle of the Kisatchie National Forest. Ranger districts are north, northwest, west and southwest of the city. An abundance of large timberlands and forest nurseries, as well as lake and recreation areas, are within a short driving distance.

This is the boyhood home of Arna Wendell Bontemps, an African-American author, poet, anthologist, and librarian. He is noted for fostering appraisal of his race and the black man''s place in American History. This museum contains an array of African-American memorabilia, pamphlets, books, and artifacts plus hosts several events throughout the year including a quiz bowl, a storytelling residency, and Jazz on the River. A gift shop is also on site. This home is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
