    The City and Borough of Juneau is a unified municipality located on the Gastineau Channel in the panhandle of the U.S. state of Alaska.The area of Juneau is larger than that of Rhode Island or Delaware and almost as large as the two states combined. Juneau, a sophisticated cosmopolitan city in the heart of the Tongass National Forest. Nestled at the base of towering mountains overlooking the Gastineau Channel, the community`s rich culture and history is displayed throughout the town and in several local museums.Travelers can hike miles of scenic trails through temperate rainforest, tidal beaches and up mountains capped by alpine meadows. Artifacts and exhibits related to early Russian, European, and American trade and settlement, as well as gold rush and mining history, are among the other fascinating items in the museum''s permanent collection.
Glacier Bay is located 60 mi. north-west of Juneau. An inlet between two promontories where 16 glaciers reach down to the sea. There are cruises to the bay in the course of which whales are sometimes seen.
Learn about the rich heritage of these two communities at the Juneau-Douglas City Museum. Local Tlingit culture, natural history, and the impact the discovery of gold on the area''s development are all addressed in the City Museum''s galleries. This museum is located near the State Capitol building.
Fed by the Juneau Icefield, Mendenhall Glacier is 12 miles long and 1 1/2 miles wide. Trails run up either side of the glacier offering great views.There is also a visitors center with curved windows which provide an almost 180 degree panoramic view over the glacier. The entrance to the exhibit gallery takes visitors through a simulated ice cave and then on to animated views of Mendenhall Glacier advancing and receding.
Ride the tram to a mountain observatory and enjoy breathtaking views of Juneau and the Inside Passage. Attractions at The Mountain Station include a theater, a bar and grill, and a gift shop. Continue to savor Alaska''s natural wonders on nearby hiking trails.
An easy four-mile hike is rewarded when you arrive at Perseverance Mine in Silverbow Basin. The community was active from 1885 to 1921 and you can still poke around the entrance to the caved-in shaft. Use a bit of caution during your hike.
