    The very old port of Trincomalee situated on the northeast coast of Sri Lanka has an idle natural harbor that has created the region an award to be fought over by foreign powers for generations.Trincomalee is the biggest city in the region. It is one of the main centers of Tamil speaking culture on the island. The beaches are used for surfing, scuba diving and fishing and whale watching.The Koṇēsvaram temple attracted pilgrims from all parts of India.The entrance to the roadway leading to Koneswaram is actually the entrance to what used to be Fort Fredrick. The recorded history of Trincomalee spans more than two and a half thousand years, beginning with civilian settlement associated with the Koneswaram temple in the pre-modern era. One of the oldest cities in Asia, it has served as a major maritime seaport in the international trading history of the island with South East Asia.
