Akrafjall is a picturesque mountain close to Akranes.
The mountain was smoothed on the top by a glacier and surrounded by water during the Ice Age.The mountain offers one of the best views in West Iceland across Faxafloi Bay and a panoramic view from Reykjanes to Snaefellsjokull Glacier.
The Museum Area at Gardar has recently made a name for itself as the main attraction in Akranes, as it is quite an experience to visit, even for those who don''t normally care for museums. The Folk Museum at Gardar presents the history of the town, the economy and life south of Skardsheidur. There, among other things, you can find the special "Field Mouse", but you''ll have to visit the museum to find out more about this suspicious "mammal".In recent years old houses connected with the history of Akranes have been moved to the Museum Area and renovated in order to keep the past alive.
