  • Description

    Idukki is a beautiful town situated in the middle of Kerala. It is known for its mountains and the dense forests surrounding it. Recently it has been famous as the power supplier of the state, as 66% of power supplied to the state is generated from the hydroelctric power projects of Idukki. Very much like a narrow gorge, the district place derives its name form the word Idukku, which also means a narrow gorge in the local dialect. Agriculture and dairy is the main occupation of the people of this district. With large amount of spices cultivated here, rubber and mushroom plantations also are getting equal importance by the farmers of this district.
  • Location

    Located in the middle part of Kerala, the District is bound on the East by Madurai District of Tamil Nadu State while on the West by Ernakulam and Kottayam Districts of Kerala. In the South it is the Pathanamthitta District, while on the North it is bound by Trichur and Coimbatore Districts of Kerala and Tamil Nadu States respectively. With an area of 5,087 sq. km, Idukki ranks first among the districts in the state in respect of area, forming 13 percent of the total area of the state. <br />

Idukki Arch DamIn the heart of the District lies the 'IDUKKI DAM' - Asia's biggest Arch Dam of 555 feets height proudly standing between the two mountains - 'Kuravanmala' (839 feets) and 'Kurathimala' (925 feets). This prestigious project of our nation is situated in Idukki District and its underground Power House is located at Moolamattom, which is about 19 km from Thodupuzha. Idukki Dam is 43 km away from Moolamattom.
Trekking in IdukkiBeing surrounded by mountains and forests there is an ample chance for the adventurous to undertake various trekking tours, in and around Idukki. Some of the important and famous treks comprise of Kurisumala near Kumily, Pullumedu, Ottakathalamedu, Grampi near Vandiperiyar and the interesting plantation tours, where one can view the spice , rubber and cashewnut plantations for which Kerala is famous for. \r\n
